Sports fanatics have their pick of events and venues in North East England. Known as a region passionate about football, rugby and cricket it’s less well known that we have thriving ice hockey and basketball communities.
The competitive spirit runs fiercely through the area’s culture and whether you’re a casual supporter or a life-long sports fan, the North East delivers every time on spectator sports.
The annual Great North Run is the world’s most popular half marathon, enjoyed by runners and spectators alike. 2010 marks the event’s 30th anniversary and this year, the race will be preceded by the brilliant Great North City Games, where English athletes will pit their skills against those of their Australian counterparts.
Football is always on the agenda, with Newcastle United and Sunderland both taking their place in the Premier League. Preparations are also well underway for Olympic football in 2012. Durham Regatta is ideal for sunny days on the banks of the Wear, watching the boats sweep by, while in nearby Chester-le-Street, Emirates Durham International Cricket Ground hosts domestic and international cricket matches.
Rugby league, rugby union, ice hockey and basketball have also claimed their place on the North East England sports calendar and a day out at Newcastle Racecourse is a great opportunity for a bit of glamour and a good old-fashioned flutter.
